Kindle Publishing – A Self-Publishing Success Story

Success Story

Big time authors like JK Rowling and John Grisham didn’t exactly plan out how they were going to succeed. When John Grisham wrote his first novel, he got rejected by almost a hundred publishers before getting a YES. JK Rowling, who was then a divorcee, wrote the first Harry Potter book while she was taking care of her daughter. With barely any income at all, getting published looked bleak for Rowling. Somehow, fate was on their side. Grisham was able to get his book, A Time to Kill, published in 1989. Today, he has sold more than 200 million copies of his books worldwide. JK Rowling became an instant wonder when Harry Potter hit the shelves, leading up to 7 books and 8 Hollywood films.

However, there is also one success story worth noting from the digital publishing world. Colleen Hoover changed her life when she published her first book on Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform. Anyone can publish on KDP, free of charge. This makes it close to impossible for authors to get to the bestsellers list. However, Colleen was able to do all of that and more. Colleen Hoover is a mother of three boys and because of her success in Kindle, she was able to quit her job and buy a new home. Her success in Kindle was pretty fast too. She was able to publish her first book entitled “Slammed” in January 2012 and another one entitled “Point of Retreat” was released in February the same year. By June, the same year, both of her books made it to the Amazon Kindle bestsellers list and by July, her books made the New York Times’ bestsellers list for eBooks.

What does this mean for aspiring authors?

Anyone can earn passive income on Amazon’s KDP, but it takes more than a click of a button to turn your book into a bestseller. A manuscript written in Microsoft Word or its equivalent can be converted into a PDF file, which is the standard file format for eBooks. Add a dashing book cover and a powerful blurb or synopsis of your book and you’re all set. It will only take you a couple of days for the book to be published on the network and all you have to do is wait for it to make it to the bestsellers list.

Today, Colleen has written more than 5 novels, with 2 more in the works.
